frequencies

frequencies is a sound installation by artist George Rahi comprising self-built instruments and a computer-controlled piano. The work draws on the various historical roles that bell sounds have played; as an organizing rhythm, as a signifier of spatial and supernatural boundaries, and as a communication channel for encoded meanings. The installation will be installed in the immense atrium of the Vancouver Public Library, sounding every 30 minutes throughout the day. The instruments enact a form of time-marking that evokes a mosaic of moments rather than the linear passage of time.

About the Artist

George Rahi is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples. His practice spans installations, instrument making, performance, and projects for radio, theatre, and public space. His work has been recognized with awards such as the Canadian Music Centre’s Adaskin Prize, Lab30 Audience Award, Canada Council Guest of Honour (Frankfurt), and the R. Murray Schafer Soundscape Award. He has held residencies at Elektronmusikstudion (EMS), Toulouse Les Orgues, Bergen Centre for Electronic Art, and HCMA Architecture.
