The See Sounds Listening Parties provide a look in to the musical and sonic influences and processes of local artists. For this version of See Sounds, which will take place online via zoom, we have invited artist S F Ho to share some sounds with us.
About the workshop:
“I hope that listening can be a conduit to write something as a group. I would like to pay attention to the power of vocal expression and oral narrative over the written page. I hope that listening can also be a means to recognize the disparate spaces that we inhabit and occupy during the pandemic. I am curious about the ways in which listening and language may connect these spaces. I will invite participants to do exercises that combine listening, writing, reading aloud and reading silently.”
S F Ho is an artist living on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ peoples. They’re into community building, books, and being sort of boring. They wrote a novella about aliens and love called George the Parasite.

JULY 25 – TOUCH AT A DISTANCE

In light of the public health crisis still unfolding, this year’s soundscape event shifts towards an outdoor broadcast format in the theme of a renewed listening, continuing our focus on ambient & soundscape based practices. We invite audiences to think of ambience as a state of awareness and conduct, a kind of immersion in, and with, other entities. We’ve invited four interdisciplinary artists to share soundscape compositions for Hadden Park, using a collection of field recordings collected in the park and surrounding environment as their raw materials. Their creations, diffused through outdoor speakers, provoke listening as a kind of ambient sensitivity, what thinker Thibaud describes as “not a simple passive reception but rather the power of intensification and transformation of our relation to the world”.

Please register your attendance in advance of the event using the free ticket registration here (limited to 30 attendees). You are encouraged to bring a blanket and a mask and join us (in a physically-distanced manner) for an evening of sounds under the canopy of trees at Hadden Park, unceded coast salish territory.

Time: 6pm to 8pm

Register in advance (it’s free) on this eventbrite link.
